Northern Trust: Charting & Visualization
An early effort within the Northern Lab at Northern Trust was to imagine a new way for the brand to express itself through one of the most prevalent elements in finance: the chart.
We explored ways of expressing and embodying the principle of "making the functional beautiful."
In the process of exploring the many different visual expressions of financial data we established several guiding principles and ideas:
- Northern Trust has a deep and important heritage that is worth preserving even in more function-first designs
- Clients don't always need a chart to behave like a tool. Sometimes it needs the ability to speak boldly on its own.
- Simplicity is not necessarily the same thing as a lack of complexity or nuance.
- Clarity in the representation of data builds trust.
